Han Solo shot first, in Star Wars 1977

Han Solo schoss zuerst, in Star Wars 1977!

Han Solo shot first, in Star Wars 1977! And why not?

Up until 1997, my Star Wars world was still very much in order. Except for the Ewok movies, there was nothing that bothered me, and thankfully I didn’t know the Star Wars Holliday Special yet. Then came the day Episode 4 hit theaters in revised form. As an obedient fan, I found myself at the first screening and after seeing the movie I was strangely irritated. Somehow, many moments no longer felt as good and quite a few of Luca’s changes turned out to be aggravations. I had the uneasy feeling that the original version of A New Hope was going to fade into obscurity and oblivion. And with it, the scene in which Han Solo makes his first appearance. In fact, there is a generation alive today that has no idea of the original version, and believes that Han Solo has a superhuman reaction that allows him to dodge a shot fired at his head just half a meter away. Or was he sitting across from an unspeakably bad and dumb head hunter who can’t manage to hit a sure target? How did he even survive in that job?

All kidding aside.

I saw Star Wars at the age of 10 in a suburban cinema in Munich. I was totally thrilled and overwhelmed from the first moment. Something comparable never existed before. It changed my view on movies and SciFi/Fantasy. That’s why I feel it’s sacrilege to tamper with a masterpiece. That Lucas scene with Solo and Greedo didn’t need a rewrite! Did they tell Lucas that the audience perceived Solo as a bad guy because he shot first? Have those people ever seen a western where the good guy and the bad guy face off? Usually they stand on the main street with enough distance between them. One waits anxiously to see who will draw first. And of course the bad guy does. He just loses his nerve and moves first. The hero moves second. Since he is more skilled, he fires the first shot. The villain may still manage to fire his gun, but the bullet misses. This is how it usually goes!

What do we see in the original version of Star Wars? Absolutely the same. Except that the villain is closer to his target. Greedo has already drawn his gun. He babbles. Solo draws second and shoots first. Why is that a problem now? I don’t see one. It’s more of a problem that Solo shoots an incompetent guy who can’t hit a target that’s only three feet in front of him.
