Taika Waititi – Die Neue Hoffnung für Star Wars?
Als Star Wars – The Force Awakens 2015 in die Kinos kam, hegte ich sehr große Erwartungen. Auch wenn J.J. Abrams der Ruf als Mr. Copy/Paste anhing, hoffte ich, dass seine Begeisterung für Star Wars ihn dazu bewegen würde, etwas neues zu erschaffen. Etwas, das eindeutig Star Wars ist, sich aber nicht bei bei jedem Aspekt aus der Vergangenheit bedient. Leider kam es so wie befürchtet und nur weniges wirkte neu und frisch. Für einen Neuen Star Wars Film ist nun Taika Waititi vorgesehen, der schon bei The Mandalorian mitgewirkt hat. Er scheint die Situation des Franchises genau erkannt zu haben, dass sich ständig zitiert und sich nicht neu erfindet. Sich neu zu erfinden wäre bitter nötig um nicht nur die Fans bei Laune zu halten, sondern auch neue Fans zu gewinnen.
Bisher ist nur wenig über Waititis Star Wars Projekt bekannt. Allerdings hat Kathleen Kennedy schon einen Termin genannt. 2023 soll dieser ominöe Star Wars Film in die Kinos kommen, obwohl noch nicht daran gearbeitet wird. Es sei denn, die Dreharbeiten finden gerade unter strengster Geheimhaltung statt.
Was hat Taiko Waititi dazu zu sagen?
“Wir müssen abwarten. Ich weiß es nicht. Ich bin immer noch im Schreibprozess. Ich überlege mir immer noch Ideen und Geschichten und möchte sicherstellen, dass es sich wie Star Wars anfühlt. Denn ich könnte sagen ‘Komm, wir schreiben einfach irgendetwas Beliebiges im Weltraum und schreiben dann Star Wars drauf’. Aber es wäre kein Star-Wars-Film ohne bestimme Elemente und einen gewissen Umgang, also muss ich sicherstellen, dass alles in einem gewissen Rahmen bleibt.”
Ich versuche gerade, meine Star Wars-Idee aufs Papier zu bringen. Ich in gespannt, wie das läuft, denn sobald ich sie [bei Lucasfilm] einreiche, wird sich herausstellen, wann [der Film] gemacht wird oder ob er überhaupt gemacht wird.
Was mich betrifft, ich brauche die Skywalkers nicht. Die Geschichte dieser Familie ist erzählt. Ich will neue Protagonisten, die in der Kulisse und der Geschichte dieser Galaxis – weit, weit entfernt, ihre Abenteuer bestehen.
Taika Waititi – The New Hope for Star Wars?
When Star Wars – The Force Awakens hit theaters in 2015, I had very high expectations. Even though J.J. Abrams had a reputation as Mr. Copy/Paste, I hoped that his enthusiasm for Star Wars would motivate him to create something new. Something that is clearly Star Wars, but doesn’t borrow from every aspect of the past. Unfortunately, it turned out as I feared and very little seemed new and fresh. Now slated for a New Star Wars film is Taika Waititi, who already worked on The Mandalorian. He seems to have recognized the situation of the franchise, which is constantly quoting itself and not reinventing itself. Reinventing itself would be sorely needed not only to keep fans happy, but also to attract new fans.
So far, little is known about Waititi’s Star Wars project. However, Kathleen Kennedy has already given a date. In 2023, this ominous Star Wars movie is supposed to hit theaters, although no work is being done on it yet. Unless the filming is currently taking place under the strictest secrecy.
What does Taiko Waititi have to say about this?
“We’ll have to wait and see. I don’t. I’m still in the writing process. I’m still thinking of ideas and stories and I want to make sure it feels like Star Wars. Because I could say ‘Come on, we’ll just write anything random in space and then put Star Wars on it.’ But it wouldn’t be a Star Wars movie without certain elements and a certain treatment, so I have to make sure everything stays within a certain framework.”
I’m trying to get my Star Wars idea down on paper right now. I’m in anxious to see how that goes, because once I submit it [to Lucasfilm], it will become clear when [the film] will be made or if it will be made at all.
As far as I’m concerned, I don’t need the Skywalkers. The story of that family has been told. I want new protagonists who have adventures in the setting and history of this galaxy – far, far away.
