Hat Star Wars seine Linie verloren?

Diese Frage treibt Star Wars Fans seit spätestens 2015 um. In der klassischen Trilogie kamen mit jedem Teil neue Personen hinzu. Sowie neue Schauplätze und Handlungsabläufe. Auch wenn es in Rückkehr der Jediritter erstmals in der Trilogie viele identische Szenarien gibt, bleibt er doch größtenteils originell und innovativ. Auch die Prequels können mit stets neuen und spannenden Szenarien glänzen. Auch wenn es dramaturgisch an etlichen Stellen hapert, wenn Lucas seine Saga selbst in die Hand nimmt oder größeren Einfluss darauf nimmt. Eine Ausnahme bildet hierbei Episode 4. Aber damals galt er noch als ernstzunehmender Filmemacher und der Einfluss der Leute bei AMERICAN ZOETROPE war noch spürbar. Ideenreichtum, Originalität, Authentizität und Innovation, prägte diese Gruppe. Lucas mag viel von seiner Qualität als Dramaturg eingebüßt haben, aber an Ideen mangelte es ihm nie.

Star Wars heute und damals

Anders ist das nun bei Disney. Dort versuchen Pseudokreative mittels Copy Paste an den Erfolg der früheren Film anzuknüpfen. Man wiederholt bekannte Muster und versäumt es neue Geschichten zu erzählen. Etwas, dass dieses faszinierende Universum garnicht nötig hätte. Es gäbe genügend Spielraum um neue Personen in den Focus zu rücken, die sich vor dem zeitlosen Star Wars Hintergrund bewegen. Es ist nicht notwendig immer wieder die altbekannten Personen und Orte zu strapazieren. Star Wars ist viel mehr als Skywalker, Solo, Vader, Palpatine und Todessterne. Mit den anfänglich geplanten 9 Episoden, die von 1977 an in einem Turnus von je 3 Jahren über die Leinwand flimmern sollten, wollte man genau diese Art des Storytellings praktizieren. Die ersten Entwürfe für eine komplexe Handlung sahen etliche Wendungen in den Schicksalen der Protagonisten vor. Mutige und unvorhersehbare Wendungen, die verhindert hätten, dass sich Star Wars ständig selbst zitiert. Das Universum von George Lucas wäre um etliche neue Welten und Helden reicher geworden und hätte nicht angefangen sich um seine eigene Achse zu drehen.

Ich würde diesen Mut zum Neuen als das eigentliche Konzept der ursprünglichen Trilogie bezeichnen. Ich meine nicht den Look. Jeder Film muss immer noch als Star Wars zu erkennen sein. Aber das ist bestimmt das geringste Problem. Neu waren 1980 in das Imperium schlägt zurück, ein Eisplanet. Genau das Gegenteil von Tatooine. Kampfläufer. Yoda, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, die Wolkenstadt, ein riesiger Sternzerstörer. Der Film war alles andere als ein Copy Paste Produkt und gekennzeichnet vom Mut, das Erfolgsmodell von EP4 nicht einfach nur in aufgeblähter Form zu wiederholen. Etwas, dass man 2015 mit Das Erwachen der Macht versucht hat. Womöglich wollte man, anders als damals, auf Nummer Sicher gehen, und hat das eigentliche, innovative Erfolgsmodell von Star Wars verraten.

Star Wars off the track?

Star Wars fans have been asking this question since 2015 at the latest. In the classic trilogy, new characters were added with each part. As well as new locations and storylines. Even though Return of the Jedi Tigers features many identical scenarios for the first time in the trilogy, it remains mostly original and innovative. The prequels can also shine with constantly new and exciting scenarios. Even if it hapens dramaturgically in several places when Lucas takes his saga into his own hands or has a greater influence on it. Episode 4 is an exception, but at that time he was still considered a serious filmmaker and the influence of the people at AMERICAN ZOETROPE was still noticeable. Inventiveness, originality, authenticity and innovation, characterized this group. Lucas may have lost much of his quality as a dramatist, but he never lacked for ideas.

Star Wars now and then

Things are different now at Disney. There, pseudo-creatives are trying to build on the success of the earlier films by means of copy paste. They repeat familiar patterns and fail to tell new stories. Something that this fascinating universe would not need. There would be enough room to bring new characters into focus, set against the timeless Star Wars backdrop. There’s no need to keep straining the old familiar characters and places. Star Wars is much more than Skywalker, Solo, Vader, Palpatine and Death Stars. With the initially planned 9 episodes, which should flicker from 1977 on in a rotation of 3 years each over the screen, one wanted to practice exactly this kind of storytelling. The first drafts for a complex plot foresaw several twists and turns in the fates of the protagonists. Bold and unpredictable twists that would have prevented Star Wars from constantly quoting itself. The universe of George Lucas would have been enriched by several new worlds and heroes and would not have begun to rotate on its own axis.

I would call this courage to the new the real concept of the original trilogy. I don’t mean the look. Every film still has to be recognizable as Star Wars. But that’s certainly the least of the problems. What was new in 1980 in the Empire Strikes Back, was an ice planet. Just the opposite of Tatooine. Battle runners. Yoda, Boba Fett, Lando Calrissian, the cloud city, a giant star destroyer. The film was anything but a copy paste product and marked by the courage not to simply repeat the successful model of EP4 in a bloated form. Something that was attempted in 2015 with The Force Awakens. Perhaps, unlike then, they wanted to play it safe and betrayed the former, innovative success model of Star Wars.
